Community Service Projects
ELLs support their local community - Summer 2024
Gates Chili School District - Rochester, NY
Helping Animals
The Secondary ENL summer program began by having beginning level language learners set language goals for themselves and learned about the importance of community service. They engaged in various activities to practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English. Students practiced pronunciation, fluency, and voice projection using a reader’s theater script about visiting an animal shelter. They also read about homeless animals that are up for adoption and wrote 'Adopt Me' paragraphs. They made cat toys and began building cat scratchers to donate.
At the shelter, students donated their time by making Kong toys for the dogs to enjoy. Students also worked together to build cat scratchers that they donated to the animal shelter.
Helping People
Students spent time preparing to visit the elementary students. Before the visit, they practiced "small talk" and initiating conversation. They prepared a story to read with their little friends and practiced speaking and writing by preparing to teach the kids how to paint a rock.
Students reflected on their language goals and most importantly learned about what they have to offer their school community. Students left feeling more confident in their abilities and ready for a new school year.
