The recent Salon held by the Special Education
SIG was a Salon success! Held at the Ossining Library, it was
the perfect venue to address this important topic of how Special
Education students are prepared for and participate in the
NYSESLAT exam.
The discussion was a lively one. Of
particular concern shared by those in attendance was the lack of
prep time for this exam (unlike other state assessments which
seem to receive much more prep time). Concerns were shared about
how ESL students are perceived in general education settings and
how they often appear to receive less attention. It was noted
that these students are required to take this exam (NYSESLAT)
annually and that it seems unfair to hold them accountable for a
test that those in attendance thought that most English as a
first language students might not pass. Also part of the
discussion was concerns surrounding how classroom teachers are
left on their own when an ESL student lands in their classroom
and they have very little knowledge of how to properly educate
them.
Overall, the evening was a smashing success!
