Mission Statement
Statement of Purpose
The NYS TESOL Secondary Education SIG provides opportunities for interactive professional development, community building, and communication within the sphere of secondary ESL education. To take advantage of the knowledge and experience of those involved in secondary ESL education in various capacities, the Secondary Education SIG will initiate dialogue and collaboration conducive to strengthening this area.
Statement of Goals
In addition to the goals of the SIGs as identified by NYS TESOL, the Secondary Education SIG adheres to a subset of goals:
- To promote the growth of pre- and in-service secondary ESL teachers as reflective practitioners and transformative educators
- To provide a forum for the voices of secondary ESL educators
- To encourage the practical application of theory as well as critical examination of classroom practices that may inform theory in the context of secondary ESL education
- To maintain a platform for inquiry, discussion, innovation, and information exchange in the domain of ESL in secondary education
- To support advocacy efforts relevant to ESL in the secondary education setting
- To foster collaboration between ESL teachers and content area teachers to support ELLs in the mainstream schooling environment
NYS TESOL Special Interest Groups (SIG)
