The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope
by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer
New York: Harper Perennial, 2009

At this spring event, we will

  • discuss the themes that permeate the book
  • share favorite passages from the book
  • brainstorm activities inspired by the book

The following is an excerpt from an Amazon.com review from one of Joe Tillman's graduate students in the TESOL program at the University of Missouri:
William Kamkwamba's story is one of intense motivation and proof that with enthusiasm and ingenuity one can achieve great things. His stories are alluring and direct the reader through a world of hazards, hunger, and hope. No longer does the word `impossible' hold value after reading William’s story. With the correct mixture of motivation, imagination, and the scientific method, real hope can emerge and great things can be accomplished. This is his lesson and it cannot go unheard.

~ Brad Moore (2010) / Professor Joe Tillman

On Wednesday, April 21, 2010 the NYC Region was very happy to host an event exploring the culture and educational systems of different countries. Entitled "The Explorer Culture Series" the event was held at The International Center in Manhattan, Ramadan Mahamat Abakar, an elementary school teacher from Chad and Dukar Bum, a secondary school teacher from Tibet spoke about their experiences as educators. Both speakers also brought traditional food from their countries to share with the group.

We are planning to host another similar event in the near future, please check the website for more details.
