Michelle Maturen

After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2004, Michelle first worked teaching English in Brittany through the French Embassy’s Teaching Assistant program.  Michelle then joined the New York City Teaching Fellows as an ESL Fellow in 2005.  She has taught ESL/ENL in grades K-10 in both transitional bilingual and freestanding English-as-a-Second-Language programs during her tenure as a teacher and ELL Program Coordinator in New York City.  She has provided instruction through self-contained, co-teaching, integrated, and stand-alone ESL/ENL models.   Michelle has also served as a mentor to new teachers enrolled in alternative route non-traditional teacher preparation programs (NYCTF and Teach for America), and she continues to host student teachers each year.  Her areas of interest include the influence of native language development on second language acquisition, mindset, and the alignment of educational policy and academic research.

Being a member of NYS TESOL allows me access to a forum for exchanging ideas with other professionals in my field, including expert opinions on current concerns around education policy for ELLs.  I also appreciate the seminars and workshops offered through the organization that help me to craft my instruction.
