Meet the NYS TESOL Member of the Month for February 2016
Courtney Turcer

Courtney Turcer, NYS TESOL Member of the Month, Rochester/Syracuse Region
Courtney has always been a lover of languages, in high school studying abroad in Italy and in college studying abroad again in Costa Rica, so she is very familiar with the struggles language learners go through when attending school in a new country and trying to acquire content and language at the same time. Courtney started her teaching career as a Spanish teacher in South Carolina which is where she was first exposed to and intrigued by English language learners. She returned to New York to pursue her Master's in TESOL at Nazareth College and has been teaching ENL to grades 2-12 in the Batavia City School District for the past three years. On Sunday nights, she teaches free English conversation classes to parents from the district. When needed, Courtney serves as an interpreter for conferences for her own students as well as others within the district. In addition she spent the summer of 2014 teaching English to children in Peru. One of her favorite activities is participating in a monthly ESL teacher share group in Buffalo where Western New York teachers come together to share ideas and strategies. Courtney values her NYS TESOL membership because it gives her the opportunity to stay connected with other professionals and informed of current TESOL practices. She attends the NYS TESOL Annual Conferences and finds the two-day event invaluable to networking and learning about innovative new ideas to bring back to her classroom. She is looking forward to a long, successful career teaching English language learners and knows that NYS TESOL will be there to support her along the way!
