Meet the NYS TESOL Member of the Month for
New York City Region
Baylor is an adjunct professor at a local college in New York City
teaching courses in advanced writing, reading, and oral communication
skills to college-level ESL students. In addition, he has taught both
in the public school system and at a vocational college in Japan for a
number of years. He has previously been the Social Media Chair for the
ALWC Winter Conference committee of Teachers College and is currently
the ALWC conference co-chair at Columbia University.
Having much interest in the educational spaces where culture and
language intersect, he has as well resided in several countries and has
a working knowledge of a few languages. His research interests look to
examine how the linguistic characteristics of non-mainstream language
varieties influence the pedagogical process in the classroom.
Having first worked with the ALWC in 2017, he was able to see the
wonderful way by which conferences, such as those organized by NYS TESOL
and the ALWC, were able to unite three of his great academic passions –
language, research, and pedagogy. Invigorated by those in the field of
TESOL who constantly look to improve on what is done in the classroom,
Derek is now looking to add his efforts towards the aims of NYS TESOL
and the ALWC: helping to enrich and inform the development of the TESOL
professionals in NYC and beyond so that the students we teach are
better able to succeed in their goals.
Check out our wonderful annual awards and nominate a colleague this year !
