On Wednesday, April 2, 2008, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, (TESOL), honored Rep. Timothy H. Bishop (D-NY) at the opening plenary of its 42nd Annual Convention and Exhibit in New York City. Rep. Bishop was honored with the TESOL Advocacy Leadership Recognition for his leadership in education reform, for which he sent a video acceptance speech. He will receive a plaque in June on TESOL’s Advocacy Day in his office.
From TESOL's press release (pdf) on March 2008:
" Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002, Rep. Bishop had previously served as the Provost for Southampton College since 1986. As a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, he has advocated for increasing the affordability of education for all Americans. He has also focused on reforming No Child Left Behind (NCLB) by meeting with educators in his district and staying informed on special challenges faced by English language learners under the law. Rep. Bishop is also an advocate for immigration reform, and supports the H-2B visa program for guest workers and their families. "
